On June 11, Mattivi hosted an Open Day dedicated to the blueberry industry, bringing together growers, technicians, researchers, and specialized companies from various production regions.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the latest innovations shaping the berry sector, with a particular focus on new varieties, crop management, and technologies designed to improve farm efficiency and profitability.

Spotlight on the New M.H.1-07 Variety

The highlight of the event was the field presentation of the new blueberry variety M.H.1-07, the first commercial release from the Mattivi breeding program and a cultivar that is already attracting significant interest from European growers.

M.H.1-07 occupies the same harvest window as the well-known Duke variety but offers several features that make it particularly attractive for commercial production.

Among the key characteristics highlighted during the field tour were:

  • More uniform fruit ripening;

  • Greater flexibility in harvest management;

  • The ability to leave berries on the plant for 2–3 weeks after color development without losing firmness;

  • Increased fruit size and improved flavor development while remaining on the plant;

  • Excellent shelf life for the fresh market.

According to information presented by Mattivi, the variety delivers productivity comparable to Duke from the early years of production and is particularly suited to regions with medium to high chilling requirements.

Innovation Beyond Genetics

The Open Day was not only focused on plant breeding but also provided an important platform for showcasing technologies and agronomic solutions designed for professional blueberry growers.

Among the participants were:

  • Agridaeus, presenting biostimulant solutions specifically developed for blueberry production;

  • BFM, showcasing mowing and weed-control equipment for mulched and container-grown blueberry plantations;

  • Fondazione Fojanini, a leading organization in agricultural research and technology transfer;

  • Marko Kokanovic (BSK Kokan), presenting mechanical harvesting solutions for blueberries;

  • Serinova, displaying its range of containers and growing systems for potted and substrate-based cultivation.

The event also attracted a large number of blueberry growers, creating valuable opportunities for technical discussions on some of the industry's most important challenges, including labor availability, sustainability, production costs, and varietal innovation.

A Rapidly Evolving Industry

The strong attendance at the event confirmed once again that the blueberry sector remains one of the most dynamic segments of European agriculture.

New varieties such as M.H.1-07, together with innovative technologies for crop management and harvesting, are becoming increasingly important tools for improving farm competitiveness and meeting the evolving demands of the global berry market.

The Mattivi Open Day demonstrated how collaboration among breeders, growers, researchers, and technology providers is essential for shaping the future of blueberry production.
